About Fairmined:

The Fairmined Standard is a global leader in its ability to generate positive impact on miners and their communities, serving as a valuable tool for transforming artisanal and small-scale mining into a proactive force for good. In April 2014, following a transparent review process with open forums involving a wide range of stakeholders, including the entire supply chain, Version 2.0 of the Fairmined Standard was launched.

The standard includes requirements for artisanal and small-scale mining organizations to conduct responsible mining operations, such as formal and legal mining practices, environmental protection, labor conditions, traceability of Fairmined minerals, and socioeconomic development through the Fairmined Premium. It also outlines market models and requirements for market actors (Fairmined suppliers).

The Fairmined standard aims to create opportunites for small-scale miners by promoting the organization and formalization of their operations and the development of their community.

Miners not only learn best practices to mine in a responsible manner by being compliant with progressive categories such as governance, health & safety, labour conditions, management & business model and traceability but they are also empowered through the fair market price of their work and able to improve the wellbeing of their faimilies and extended community through the concerted use of the premium.

According to the Fairmined Premium Report 2022, the Fairmined approach "has ushered sustainability into the achieved improvements by helping to build responsibly commerical alliances between buyers and certified mines, ensuring fair prices for minerals and additional premiums."

Fairmined gold nurtures certified miners to become technically, economically, environmentally and socially feasable, sustainable businesses in their own right, providing them with a sustainable livelihood.

The Fairmined Standard was developed by the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM), a non-profit organization globally recognised as a leader and pioneer of responsible artisanal and small scale mining. Fairmined transforms mining into an active force for good, ensuring social developement and environmental protection.

Vision and Principles for Responsible Artisanal and Small-scale Mining

The STANDARD is aimed at creating opportunities for artisanal and small-scale miners and their communities. The STANDARD follows ARM’s vision for Responsible Artisanal and Small-scale Mining:

“ASM is a formalized, organized and profitable activity that uses efficient technologies and is socially and environmentally responsible. It progressively develops within a framework of good governance, legality, participation and respect for diversity and contributes to a generation of decent work, local development, poverty reduction, wealth creation and social peace in our nations driven by a growing consumer demand for sustainable minerals, ethical jewelry and responsibly sourced gold in general.”

The scheme is for artisanal and small-scale miners as defined in section 0.2.1, not industrial medium- or large-scale mining. It is neither intended for new gold rush situations, nor for newcomer mining in environmentally sensitive areas. The overall objective of this STANDARD is to promote the progressive organization and formalization of the ASM sector, bringing with it improved labor rights, safer working conditions for miners, and strengthened miners’ organizations with the capacity to campaign for legislation and public policies that promote their rights and enable a responsible ASM sector.

The STANDARD builds on ASMO’s (Artisanal and Small-scale Miners' Organizations) compliance with a relevant country’s legislation. It drives improved environmental management, especially mitigating the effects of use of mercury and other toxic chemicals, enhancing ecological restoration, and responsible water management. It promotes the wellbeing of families and children in mining communities, brings better social security, gender equality, child protection and the elimination of child labor in certified organizations. The STANDARD stimulates the ASMOs to become economically, technically, environmentally and socially viable businesses, according to their dimensions and particularities. Through fairer market access and a premium for social investment, it benefits local communities in mineral rich ecosystems, and improves governance in the mining sector. Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining (ASGM) constitutes a livelihood for a growing number of artisanal small-scale miners, with an estimated 15 million people who are permanent miners, and it is estimated that over 100 million people depend on it for seasonal and/or indirect income. This Fairmined certification scheme is aimed at creating opportunities for artisanal miners and their communities, who often combine mining with agriculture, herding, and other rural activities.
